The Effectiveness of Herbal Remedies

FoodHerbal.com. Many people around the web — on forums, in chat rooms, on mainstream sites like CNN.com — often hear how herbal remedies and alternative medicines are a crock. Often a friend will tell a story about how so-and-so herbal treatment didn’t do a thing for them, and then they’ll come to the conclusion that all herbs are worthless.

Here’s the truth. One herbal remedy that does wonders for some people might not seem to do a thing for others. It’s the same thing with prescription and over the counter medications too — some people will have adverse reactions to a drug when everybody else seems to take it with no problems. After all, there’s a reason for the “rare” side effects listed on the back of pill bottles.

Indian Medicinal Plant May Combat Liver Cancer

Liver cancer is the fifth most common cancer in the world with a poor prognosis. About three quarters of the cases of liver cancer are found in Southeast Asia, including China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, India, and Japan. The frequency of liver cancer in Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa is greater than 20 cases per 100,000 population. Moreover, recent data show the frequency of liver cancer in the U.S. overall is rising.

With the increasing trend in the incidence of cancers in our country, biomedical research directed at early detection and diagnosis, prognosis and survival, as well as prevention of progression of malignancy, is of prime importance. The aim of cancer chemoprevention is to circumvent the development and progression of malignant cells through the use of non-cytotoxic nutrients, herbal preparations/natural plant products, and/or pharmacological agents.

Encouraging dietary intake with herbal supplements may therefore be an effective strategy to limit DNA lesions and organic injuries leading to cancers and other chronic degenerative diseases.

A research team led by Prof. Malay Chatterjee from Jadavpur University investigated the primary chemopreventive mechanisms of Acanthus ilicifolius in an in vivo tumor-transplanted murine model. A. ilicifolius, popularly known as ¡°Harkach Kanta¡± is distributed widely throughout the mangroves of India, including Sunderbans in West Bengal, west coasts, and the Andamans, and in other Asian countries like Singhal, Burma, China, Thailand etc.

Scientific evidence and herbal medicine

There is a lot of mysticism behind it. The approach involves: “balancing” the body’s vital energy; the belief that it can treat anything; it is holistic, which is the reason given why no two practitioners will prescribe the same treatment for exactly the same condition in the same person; and they insist that it is natural and therefore safe.

There is no doubt that herbs contain chemical compounds, often many thousands, many of which have a physiological effect on the body. In fact up to 25% of modern medicines are based on plant origins: Aspirin; Quinine; and Digitalis, for example, are well known.

What is Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine, sometimes referred to as Herbalism, Botanical medicine or Herbology, is the use of plants, in a wide variety of forms, for their therapeutic value. Herb plants produce and contain a variety of chemical compounds that act upon the body and are used to prevent or treat disease or promote health and well-being.

A brief history of herbal medicine.
Humans, and even Neanderthals, have used plants to treat their ailments for at least tens of thousands of years; most likely even longer than that.
The first written accounts of the use of herbs originate in China, although all other civilizations from the ancient world were using plants as natural remedies for their ailments. Western herbal medicine dates back to ancient Greece and its famous doctors like Hippocrates and Galen.
The 15th to 17th centuries were the most popular time for herbalism in Europe. Herbal remedies are still relatively popular today, mainly due to the fact that they are regarded as harmless because they are natural.
